To be eligible, an applicant must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education. At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.
GRE Scores: Scores cannot be more than 5 years old. Official GRE scores must be sent directly to Graduate Division Student Services. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for UHM is 4867.
The department has no minimal ''cut scores'' for the GRE, an applicant's scores are one of several factors considered in the admissions decision.

The departmental minimum for the TOEFL score is 600/100 (paper/internet). The department minimum for the IELTS score is 7.00.
The minimum TOEFL scores for teaching assistantship applicants is 600/100 (paper/internet), with subtest scores of 25 for listening and 25 for speaking. The minimum IELTS scores for teaching assistantship applicants is 7.00.
Transcripts: One transcript is required from each post-secondary institution attended, including any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs.

The M.A. in East Asian Languages and Literatures is offered with three areas of concentration: Chinese language and literature, Japanese language and literature, and Korean language and literature. The program is designed to provide students with advanced professional training in the history and structure of the chosen language and the literature of that language. Within each area of concentration, the student may choose to emphasize either language or literature. The program is also intended to provide professional training and practical teaching experience for future teachers of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The faculty and facilities in the area of teaching East Asian languages are numerous and diverse and encouragement is given to those interested in pursuing teaching careers.The M.A. program in Japanese Language/Linguistics is designed to produce Japanese language specialists who are trained in all the fields of Japanese Linguistics (pedagogy, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, phonology and morphology, and syntax and semantics) with one of the fields as their specialization. The program also provides practical teaching experience for future teachers of Japanese.
