The Graduate Program in German at the University of Virginia is well established and dates back many decades. The only doctoral program in German in the Commonwealth of Virginia, we constitute a center of excellence for the study of German literature and culture. Central to the graduate program are the German Department's strengths in literary, narrative, and cultural theory, intellectual history from the Enlightenment to the Present, genre studies (especially in drama and the novel), critical studies of modern media (e.g. ''Google''), Jewish Studies, and the Middle Ages, to name just some of our strengths. A highly engaged faculty, we also benefit by hosting each fall semester a ''Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor'' from Germany-a position most recently filled by Professor Ulrike Stamm. We have until recently also benefitted from having a lively and highly motivated group of graduate students, students who have maintained the tradition each year of organizing and hosting the longest standing Graduate Conference in German in the United States. Our exchange program with the Universities of Dortmund, as well as UVA's nominations for DAAD fellowships that students may compete for, ensure that all students who want to spend a year in Germany will have the opportunity to do so. Similarly, our strong records of M.A. and Ph.D. completion together with our excellent placement record for recent doctoral students is something we are proud to note.
