Ideally, applicants should request letters of recommendation from at least three instructors in Russian (or other Slavic) language and literature.
Writing sample
Applicants should submit a recent sample of academic writing in English. For the Languages and Literatures program, most useful are papers on literary topics, ideally on Russian or Slavic material, though other national traditions are acceptable.
The minimum internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score requirement is 90 (including sectional minimums of 22 in speaking, 22 in writing, 23 in reading and 23 in listening). The minimum paper-based TOEFL score requirement is 600. Applicants may submit scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as an alternative to the TOEFL exam. The minimum IELTS score requirement is 7.0 in each section

课程简介
The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures offers two MA degrees, one with a concentration in Russian language and literature and one with a concentration in Contemporary Russian Studies (CRS). It offers the PhD in Slavic languages and literatures with a specialization in Russian literature and culture. Language and literature students take classes primarily in the Slavic department. CRS students combine courses in Slavic with courses in History, Politics, Sociology, and other disciplines. (There is no PhD in CRS, either at Virginia or elsewhere in the US.)
