The Department's minimum admission requirements are as follows:
a degree in linguistics, or a closely related discipline, with a grade point average of 3.3 in the last two years of undergraduate or graduate work, from a recognized institution.
evidence of separate undergraduate-level or graduate-level courses in at least 4 of the following 6 core areas:
General linguistics
Phonetics
Phonology
Morphology
Syntax
Semantics
Up-to-date official copies of your transcripts for all previous post-secondary schooling showing marks obtained (submitted in the original language, accompanied by a certified English translation)
Curriculum Vitae (use the form provided as part of the online application or upload your own)
Three letters of reference (referees submit their letters directly to your online application)
Statement of research interests (see below for details)
Proof of English Language proficiency
A sample of academic writing (a short report or paper)
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT, in-person or special at-home edition) *- Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent
Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)- Revised to: 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band
Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (either CAEL [paper] or CAEL CE [computer]) Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)- 61 with a minimum band score of 60

The Department of Linguistics offers degree programs leading to either an MSc or a PhD in Linguistics. In addition to classes in the traditional core subjects of theoretical and descriptive linguistics, we also provide training in areas such as quantitative analysis and experimental design.The PhD program in our Department requires the completion of 18 credits (6 courses) of coursework, selected by students in conjunction with their Supervisor, plus two additional courses (LING 693 and LING 694) leading up to Doctoral Candidacy. Doctoral Candidacy is the second stage of the PhD programme, and involves the writing of two Generals Papers and a Prospectus (the Candidacy Portfolio), and the completion of an Oral Doctoral Candidacy Examination. The final stage in the degree is the writing and defense of a Doctoral Dissertation.The Doctoral degree is ideally completed in 4 years, with coursework done in the first year, Doctoral Candidacy completed in the second and third years, and the dissertation written and defended in the fourth year.
