The philosophy department at Notre Dame houses one of the largest and most diverse PhD. programs in North America, with students working in a wide variety of areas both of contemporary philosophy and of the history of philosophy. Notre Dame has consistently been ranked as one of the top 20 philosophy departments in the United States, and is among the best in the English-speaking world in a variety of areas of specialization. These include logic, the philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of action, the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of science, the history of ancient philosophy, the history of medieval philosophy, and 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy. We are committed to providing our students a broad training in philosophy, as well as the resources for students to specialize in an area of their choosing. Graduate students at Notre Dame have been distinguished by their ability to draw from the history of philosophy in their investigations of contemporary problems and their ability to apply current philosophical activity to questions of deep human significance. Students in the program maintain close working relationships not only with the more than 35 faculty members in the Philosophy Department, but also with members of the Medieval Institute, the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values, and the departments of Mathematics, Physics, and History.
