The Communication Studies program prepares students for success in a number of fields. Communication skills are fundamental to all professions, as well as daily life. Course topics include public speaking, small group communication, argumentation and debate, oral interpretation, interpersonal communication as well as forensics practicum. The department sponsors a highly successful forensics program. Students here compete with students from other colleges and universities in public speaking and literary performance events. The field of Communication Studies focuses on how people communicate across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media. In a report on today's fastest growing careers, the U.S. Department of Labor states that communication skills will be in demand across occupations well into the 21st century. Taking Speech Communication courses in college is beneficial to any career path.
