Admission to this program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. Admission is limited to holders of baccalaureate degrees from accredited institutions and is granted only to those applicants who evidence promise of success in industrial relations study.
Admission to the program requires three letters of recommendation and completion of the program application form, in addition to the transcripts and the application form required by Graduate Enrollment Services. The letters of recommendation must be written by college or university professors under which the applicant has studied, and/ or current or former employers. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is required of all applicants. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the following:
the overall or upper-division grade point average,
GRE and GMAT scores,
applicant's performance in previous graduate courses, if any,
quality of the applicant's employment experience at increasing levels of responsibility, and,
other appropriate indicators of successful performance as a graduate student, including the content of reference appraisals.
Students applying to the program who have completed a graduate degree, may be exempt from submitting GRE and GMAT scores.
To establish English proficiency, you are required to submit an official qualifying score meeting minimum Graduate School requirements. The Graduate School's English Language Proficiency requirements are the absolute minimum, programs can set higher minimum standards. You are expected to meet the requirements set by your program of interest.

Among the leading graduate programs of industrial relations, Wayne State's master's in employment and labor relations (MAELR) program provides a challenging and rich educational experience for students pursuing careers in human resource management and labor-management relations. Emphasizing the development of professional competencies, the MAELR curriculum is prepares students to master the requisite analytical and practical skills for attaining leadership positions in business, labor organizations, government and not-for-profit organizations.<br><br>From an extensive offering of courses, students receive classroom training in human resource management (strategy, compensation, staffing, selection, training, work team systems and interested-based problem solving), union-management relations (contract negotiations, administration and arbitration, union organizations and union management's joint decision-making), dispute resolution, labor market analysis, international business and labor relations and in employment and labor law.<br><br>Grounded in a long tradition of multidisciplinary study, the MAELR program exposes students to nationally and internationally recognized scholars and practitioners from labor relations, management, history, psychology, economics, political science, sociology and law. Bringing a wealth of professional and consulting experience to the classroom, instructors integrate cutting-edge research and theory and real case examples and exercises so that students learn about the most current workplace innovations and emerging trends and issues.
