课程简介
Anthropology is a holistic science dedicated to the study of human cultural and biological diversity. Its five sub-fields are: cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, linguistic anthropology, applied anthropology, and archaeology. Anthropologists study human beings in all times and places from their biological make-up and material cultural adaptations to their institutions, behaviors and understanding about the world. Anthropologists investigate human variation and its biological basis by exploring modern human adaptations, our nonhuman primate relatives and the fossil evidence for human evolution. Anthropologists also examine human culture and the relationships between language and culture and, through the discovery of archaeological artifacts, interpret the development of cultures from their earliest origins to the present.

The Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology at HSU is a rigorous yet flexible degree program focused on building relevant and competitive skills for the application of anthropological perspectives, methods, and theories to real-world issues and a diverse array of careers in today's academic, non-academic, and increasingly global job market. Students in the program form a cohesive thesis and career plan while they focus on one of the modern or traditional areas of anthropology or utilize the freedom that is intrinsic within the discipline to bridge disciplines as relevant to research and career interests. This innovative hybrid program begins with an intensive Summer/Early Fall Institute held on the HSU campus. During this time, students build camaraderie, receive introductory methods training, and are introduced to the many facets of the discipline and program.

Archaeology studies past and present cultures and cultural heritage preservation by unearthing, documenting, and analyzing material remains. Archaeologists study material remains, or the things that a culture leaves behind after they have left or disappeared. Think of the items in your own home that may still be around in a few hundred or a few thousand years. Archaeologists find these kinds of items from past cultures, from weapons and tools, to bones from slaughtered animals and fossilized seeds and plants. They study each artifact in context, and use that information to determine things about the culture that left them behind. What kind of food did they eat What kind of tools did they make, and how did they make them What sort of structures did they build What did their artwork and symbols mean Archaeologists study the remains of cultures from millions of years ago to the recent past.
