Social studies is a complex, dynamic, and contested field. This specialization within the Learning, Cognition, Instruction, and Development concentration prepares students to conduct high-quality research on critical issues in social studies education. Our students develop an interdisciplinary approach to conceptualizing and conducting research on problems in the field. They also become familiar with historical, pedagogical, curricular, cognitive, sociological, and political understandings of social studies education. By the end of the program, students identify and conduct original research on a problem of special interest, providing for a research-oriented doctoral experience. Our specialization faculty have expertise in the history of education, social and cultural studies in education, and interpretive research.
