国际学生入学条件
Being an undergraduate sociology major is not a requirement in applying to the graduate program. However, those who do not have appropriate prior coursework (such as undergraduate sociological theory and methods) will need to make up these courses, in addition to the usual degree requirements, if they are admitted and enrolled.
Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE) scores. Scores should be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service by designating UHM as a recipient during or after test registration. While the GRE is required, scores are incorporated as part of a holistic admissions process, and there is no formulaic weighting or minimum cutoff score.
Statement of purpose - While there is no standard form, this document should describe the applicant's research interests and explain why they want this degree program and to study in this particular department of sociology.
Three letters of recommendation - There is no official form for letters of recommendation. Please have recommenders write their letters on their official letterhead. If the recommendations are to be confidential, letters should be sealed in envelopes with the recommender's signature across the flap.
Academic writing sample - A writing sample is required for PhD applicants but optional for MA applicants. In either case, samples should be chosen appropriately to show readiness of the applicant to engage in graduate-level work in sociology.
To be eligible, an applicant must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education. At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL (iBT) - 61, TOEFL PBT-500, Duolingo English Test - 95

课程简介
An MA in sociology opens the door to a variety of occupations and can also be a strong complement to professional or academic training in other fields. Our MA program provides a basic foundation in the theories and methods of sociology, specialized graduate seminars in several subfields of sociology, and supportive guidance from a three-person committee while researching and writing an MA thesis. Our very international faculty and graduate students form a close-knit and supportive community centered on common research interests. The Plan A thesis MA degree is intended to be a terminal degree, but students who perform at a high level in the MA program and whose MA thesis demonstrates their ability to do doctoral level research and writing may petition to enter the doctoral program when they reach the end of the MA program. We admit all students to the Plan A (thesis) MA. We can convert this to a Plan B (non-thesis) MA for two specific situations: students who enroll in the Population Studies MA program through the department, and students in the Plan A MA program whom the committee determines will be unable to complete an acceptable thesis within the time they have available for the degree program. While persons with an MA in sociology may be hired to teach sociology at the community college level or to serve as part-time lecturers at four year institutions, it should not be considered a sufficient, competitive credential for teaching at the college level. Most such positions now require the doctorate.
