课程简介
This 154-credit program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Adolescence Education: Mathematics and the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics in five years, a full year less than if the two degrees were pursued separately. Graduates of the accelerated B.S./M.S. program will be qualified for New York State certification as mathematics teachers of grades 7 to 12.
B.S. in Adolescence Education: Mathematics (Grades 7 to 12) - The B.S. in Adolescence Education: Mathematics (Grades 7 to 12) provides an in-depth look into the theory and practice of teaching middle and high school students, using classroom instruction to foster intellectual, social and personal development. You will study the dynamics of group and individual motivations, and learn to develop innovative instruction plans. The program includes supervised practice teaching in actual classrooms at two grade levels (7 to 9 and 10 to 12), allowing you to observe certified teachers and interact with the teenage student population. As a mathematics education major, you will strengthen your knowledge of geometry, algebra, calculus, sets, probability and the fundamentals of mathematical and logical thinking. Through the program, you will acquire skills in problem solving and teaching strategies that can actively engage students in learning mathematics with texts of varying content level and difficulty. Employment prospects for mathematics education majors are bright. There is a critical shortage of math teachers throughout the country, creating a demand for graduates with a mathematics education degree.
M.S. in Applied Mathematics - The M.S. in Applied Mathematics provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematics principles and skills required in business and industry, as well as a foundation for doctoral-level study. Professors with top degrees from prominent universities teach with an outstanding diversity of perspective and depth of expertise. The combined B.S. and M.S. degree program requires the completion of 154 credits. After you complete the degree requirements set by LIU Post, satisfy the New York State Teaching Certification Requirements, and successfully pass all licensure tests (LAST, ATS-W and CSTs), you will be awarded Initial Teaching Certification by the New York State Department of Education to teach mathematics to grades 7 to 12. After completion of three years of professional teaching experience, you will be eligible for Professional Teaching Certification without taking additional coursework.
