For entry onto our postgraduate research programmes, we normally look for a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant business or social science related subject. For applications for MPhil and PhD study in Economics we also normally expect a Masters degree in Economics, or overseas equivalent, that includes core classes in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and a dissertation or research project. When reviewing your academic achievements, we're particularly interested in grades which relate to independent research (for example, your research project or dissertation). A strong score in these elements may allow us to consider entry with a lower degree classification.

IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent, with no individual element below 5.5.
TOEFL (ibt): 80 overall, with the following minimum scores in each component: Listening: 17 Reading: 18 Speaking: 20 Writing: 18

Our research examines how the economy performs and evolves at a national level, with a particular focus on applications to real-world challenges facing policymakers and business.<br><br>Areas of research include macro-modelling of the UK and Scottish economies, policy evaluation, fiscal analysis, and labour markets.<br><br>Research in applied macroeconomics has been a key activity of the Department of Economics for almost four decades. Our aim is to develop evidence-based theoretical models and to provide theory-informed and policy-relevant research, which is associated with high-level, high impact knowledge exchange.
