The MFA program at UAlberta is a flexible, practice-based program that offers students opportunities to develop a media-based studio practice, as well as to work across multiple media. Students work with faculty versed in artistic-research methodologies and draw on expertise from across the university for interdisciplinary experiences. The Department of Art & Design Drawing/Intermedia area offers students diverse approaches to representations in contemporary art. After establishing skills in classical drawing, you will quickly progress into advanced levels of Intermedia practice. Explorations in the Drawing/Intermedia area range from traditional drawing to photography, installation, digital media and performance art. This area of study is strongly based on ideas, conceptual practice and contemporary art supported by belief that drawing can greatly inform your artistic practice. The Master of Fine Arts in the Drawing/Intermedia program provides graduates with an in-depth training in studio practice, including the development of refined technical, formal and conceptual skills. In addition, graduate students are mentored in creative research methodologies that enable them to more effectively support their studio practice with academic research and/or theoretical discourse related to their thesis topic. Students also gain insights into how their own studio relates and intersects with questions within the broader field of contemporary art. There are numerous funding opportunities for students throughout the program including scholarships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships.
