The music education degree program is designed for forward-thinking public school educators who desire a planned and rigorous academic program of study in music theory, history, research and education combined with relevant topical seminars. Core courses provide a basis for students to formalize their own philosophy of music education and guide their students to develop greater understanding of the artistic process and benefits of creative activity. Coursework can be completed in two academic years or in three summers. Core courses are offered on a consistent basis in the evenings during the fall and spring semesters and on a rotating basis in the summer so in-service teachers can complete the degree in a timely manner. Research and creative endeavors are natural outgrowths of the program. Students complete research papers and in-class presentations in the core courses (analytical styles, music history and research) as well as in music education courses. Students present their research findings in public forums in the history and research courses and are encouraged to submit research proposals for inclusion at the annual state music conference as well as other regional and national conferences. Graduate assistantships are offered on a competitive basis.
