The Master of Music (M.M.) degree program is the largest at the School of Music, with approximately 70% of students enrolled. It is a two-year program for students who hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent and are looking for a master's degree in their area of specialty.M.M. students take a variety of classes, including music history, hearing, and chamber music. Performance majors play in the Yale Philharmonia and in the New Music New Haven concert series. Composition majors can hear their music performed in the New Music New Haven series.There are many electives to choose from at Yale, and all students must complete one nonperformance elective per semester, for a total of four. Students can take classes in Yale College and in other graduate/professional schools at Yale.To earn the M.M. degree, students must pass a minimum of 72 credit hours with a B average. All students must pass the keyboard proficiency test. All students must also perform a degree recital in the final year of study. Certain departments require a recital in each year of residence.The winds and brass programs at the Yale School of Music offer broad training in solo and ensemble playing as well as teaching and other opportunities outside the concert hall.In private lessons and weekly studio seminars, students are encouraged to explore as broad a repertoire as possible, spanning music from the Baroque to the present day.Chamber music is an integral part of the Yale experience, and students also play in various ensembles and configurations in the New Music New Haven series. The Yale Philharmonia offers important orchestral experience, with a wide variety of repertoire and frequent opportunities to work with guest conductors.
