The Master of Musical Arts (M.M.A.) is a performance-oriented degree designed for students who desire further education beyond a Master of Music degree. Those who have already received a D.M.A. are not eligible to apply for the M.M.A. program.The M.M.A. is a two-year degree program for external candidates and one year for internal applicants. An M.M. degree in the same major is required for admission.This rigorous program offers enhanced performance training and numerous performance opportunities. In addition to private lessons and chamber music, students take part in relevant ensembles such as the Yale Philharmonia, Yale Opera, and Yale Schola Cantorum. M.M.A. candidates will perform a recital in each year of study, one of which must include a lecture component. The School of Music also offers support for travel and career development.A full tuition award and fellowship are made to all students who are admitted to the Yale School of Music, with the exception of those receiving awards from other agencies.The winds and brass programs at the Yale School of Music offer broad training in solo and ensemble playing as well as teaching and other opportunities outside the concert hall.In private lessons and weekly studio seminars, students are encouraged to explore as broad a repertoire as possible, spanning music from the Baroque to the present day.Chamber music is an integral part of the Yale experience, and students also play in various ensembles and configurations in the New Music New Haven series.The Yale Philharmonia offers important orchestral experience, with a wide variety of repertoire and frequent opportunities to work with guest conductors.
