A Bachelor of Music degree or its equivalent (60 hours of music courses) and a major in music therapy are required for admission. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. Students who have a Bachelor of Music degree, but do not have a major in music therapy, may complete the required undergraduate courses, including the six-month internship, for Board Certification by completing the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music therapy Equivalency.

The graduate program at Western Michigan University is a 30-credit hour Master of Music program that includes the examination of current research and issues affecting the clinical, academic, and professional preparation of music therapists. Clinical application is also stressed along with the development of a model of practice in music therapy at a local facility as part of the graduate practicum experience that is overseen by a faculty member. Students in the graduate program have the option to complete either the thesis or a graduate capstone project as the culminating requirement for the degree.
