For the MA program the Department's minimum admission requirements are a Bachelor's degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last ★60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.
For the performance areas, a BMus degree with an average of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate or graduate work at the University of Alberta or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The GPA calculation will be determined from the most recent 2 years (or 60 credits) of course work

Applicants with degrees and qualifications in a language other than English may need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency. Proficiency can be demonstrated by a satisfactory score on one of the following approved English language examinations
A current Curriculum Vitae (or use the form provided in the application)
Statement of Interest - one or two pages summarizing your background in Music, an explanation of why you wish to pursue graduate studies, and your future career goals
A brief summary of personal achievements (outside of Music), involvement in student government and the university community (ie: boards or committees), involvement in professional societies and volunteerism
Official transcripts and certificates/diplomas from all colleges or universities attended, with the institution seal, date and appropriate signature
Official translation of foreign transcripts and certificates/diplomas with the original transcript in the original language
Original document of proof of English proficiency (if the undergraduate degree is from a non-English university)
Three references from persons who are knowledgeable about the applicants academic and research potential and capabilities. The letter submitted must be on letterhead and signed by the referee
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT, in-person or special at-home edition) - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent
Academic International English Language Testing System
(IELTS) Revised to: 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band

Whether you dream of performing, studying the music of other times and cultures, or composing works of your own, the Department of Music offers a variety of programs and courses to suit your passion.Both the thesis-based and course-based MA programs strive to produce outstanding scholars and teachers who deal both critically and respectfully with a variety of musical traditions while engaging in scholarly conversation beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. Students encounter a broad spectrum of approaches to music. Members of the faculty have published on topics ranging from medieval Islamic musical iconography to the history of the concerto, from studies of oral transmission of music among Canadian ethnic groups to explorations of the class and gender issues that shaped the reception of music in eighteenth and nineteenth century GermanY. The Department's offerings in ethnomusicology address the issues of music as performance, music and power, and the meaning of music and musical activity. Study cross-cultural and socially grounded musical processes through courses in the theory and methodology of the field, area studies and work in anthropology. Regional strengths include South Asia, Islamic areas, and Native and ethnic Canada.
