There are three routes of entry available:
Track A: Highly qualified BSc graduates meeting the following requirements may be eligible to apply directly to the PhD Program: An appropriate bachelor's degree in the Life Sciences from a recognized university. A minimum A average in the third and fourth years. Evidence of strong research experience.
Track B: Excellent students in LMP MSc program may be recommended for transfer to the PhD program by their graduate advisory committee. Transfer exams are held within 18 months after the start of the MSc program.
Track C: MSc graduates and applicants with MD, DDS, DVM (or equivalent) degree. A minimum A- average is required in graduate courses, or in senior-level BSc coursework if MSc course requirements were minimal or absent. There should also be evidence of competence in research based on scientific publications, abstracts, or conference presentations.

Metabolism and nutrition encompasses the molecular basis of biological processes as they relate to endocrine, reproductive, metabolic, and nutritional disorders.<br>Our researchers study the mechanisms in diabetes, endocrine function and dyslipidemias.<br>Others are investigating the role of nutrients and of toxic substances such as metals in our environment. The effects of hormones on tissues such as the thyroid, bone, and reproductive organs are also included in this area of research.<br><br>Experimental approaches include investigations of gene structure and function, cell signaling, transcriptional regulation, metabolomics, mouse genetics, and animal physiology. <br><br>Faculty members are involved in innovative clinical and basic research that focuses on: <br><br>the pathogenesis of obesity and Type II diabetes <br>identification of autoimmune markers and mediators of Type I diabetes <br>pancreatic stem cells and islet transplantation <br>metabolic disorders of blood lipids that lead to hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia <br>insight into metabolic factors that contribute to bone loss, osteoporosis and renal failure <br>endocrine derangements that accompany conditions of the thyroid, pituitary and reproductive glands
