We welcome your application to our doctoral program in Rhetoric and Composition. You will be considered for admission after completion of a BA in English or an MA in English with a focus in rhetoric and composition, rhetoric and writing studies, or professional writing and rhetoric. You may also be considered if you have a BA/MA/MFA in a related field, such as literature, English education, creative writing, communications, or linguistics. If you enter the program with a BA, you will first enroll in the Master's program in Rhetoric and Writing Studies offered by the English department. Upon finishing the MA degree, you will complete the additional coursework required in the Ph.D. program.

Minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam
Minimum score of 79 on TOEFL internet-based test (TOEFL ibT)
Minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The PhD program in Rhetoric and Composition at UTEP focuses on cultural and digital rhetorics and community engagement. Our faculty do work in community literacies, risk communication, health and medical rhetorics, second language pedagogies, intercultural rhetoric, service-learning, and user-experience. Our faculty receive grant support for their research and disseminate their work in respected and peer-reviewed venues.<br><br>The program prepares students for careers in higher education, business, industry, and government. Our graduates have secured tenure-track appointments at a range of institutions, including research-intensive universities, four-year institutions, and community colleges. Several of our most recent graduates work in educational administration.<br><br>Located in a majority Hispanic, Research 1 university on the U.S.-Mexico border, our program regularly engages with the political, cultural, linguistic, and economic richness and complexity of the borderlands.
