The teaching majors in physics and earth-space science-two distinct programs-are for those who wish to teach one of these subjects to grades 5-12. As science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields continually develop, our courses combine fundamental science courses with the Department of Education's teaching curriculum. The teaching majors are designed not only to give you an exceptional understanding of physics or earth-space science, but also to prepare you to pass your knowledge off to students in a classroom setting. To be eligible for a middle/high school teaching license, you must take at least 60.5 credit hours in physics and supporting courses, or 45.5 credit hours in earth-space science and supporting courses, in addition to education courses. You can complete the program in four years. To make sure you stay on track, you'll have two academic advisors-one in the Physics & Earth-Space Science Department and one in the Teacher Education Department.
Curriculum design gives you a wealth of knowledge in the sciences as well as in the fundamentals of teaching
Education courses teach you to confidently enter a classroom, from lesson-planning to articulating your own unique approach to pedagogy.
Ability to enter the classroom within your first year, gaining experience very early on in your education
A variety of school settings give you practice with various teaching methods
UIndy's School of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
