Admission to the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Physiology at Penn State requires the following:
An appropriate academic background, including a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) during the last two years (junior/senior) of a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university. Research experience is desirable. Ideally, you will have taken the following courses at undergraduate level: biochemistry, a basic cell and molecular biology course, and a mammalian physiology course (with a practical, laboratory component). Deficiencies in chemistry, biological science, mathematics, and physics must be made up early in the graduate program. The following documents will be required as part of the Graduate School application process:
Three letters of recommendation
Personal statement of motivations and goals
Curriculum vitae/resume
Transcript(s)
International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisaaional admission, enrollment, and, if necessary, remedial course work. The Physiology program is the oldest inter-college biomedical sciences program at Penn State's University Park campus. It is uniquely focused on the study of integrative mechanisms of living systems, and seeks to advance society's understanding of how body systems work at all levels - molecular, cellular, tissues, organs - and apply that knowledge to reduce disease and improve the health of individuals. Our recently awarded NIH predoctoral training program includes a cutting edge interdisciplinary curriculum focused on developing skill sets necessary for entry into the 21st century biomedical workforce. Our doctoral program was recently ranked in the top-10 physiology programs in the country. Our two-year M.S. program is a gateway to professional school admission or the Ph.D. degree.
