生物学是对生物的研究，涵盖了从分子生物学到生态系统生态学的各个领域。这种广度反映在Western的课程表以及教职员工和学生的研究中。具有一般重点的生物学课程允许学生在教职顾问的帮助下，开发量身定制的高级课程，以满足他们的教育需求。Western’的生物学系聘用了大量的教职员工，他们都积极从事教学和研究工作。生物系的学生会受到致力于下一代教育的领域专家的高质量指导。适度的班级规模使教师能够促进小组讨论和课堂上以学生为中心的学习活动。所有高级实验室均由教师本人而非研究生授课。
Biology is the study of living organisms. As scientists, biologists have three goals: (1) understanding the structure and function of organisms, (2) generating and disseminating reliable data pertaining to biological systems, and (3) developing a deep understanding of the natural world that can inform solutions for the serious environmental, medical, and social concerns facing humanity.<br><br>Our goal as educators is to maintain intensive academic programs designed to stimulate curiosity, creativity and life-long critical thinking in students who pursue a liberal arts education in Biology. All of the B.S. programs in Biology are designed for students who plan to pursue post-graduate study or professional careers in biology or teaching. We have designed these programs to enable students to develop an integrated conceptual foundation in biology, as well as critical thinking skills, quantitative problem-solving abilities, leadership and team-building skills, and scientific research skills. This degree program provides students the flexibility to develop an individualized upper-division curriculum. This allows students, under advisement, to tailor plans of study that meet specific needs, or more integrative plans of study that span several disciplines in Biology. A diploma granted under this major will indicate ''Bachelor of Science'', official transcripts will indicate Biology – General Emphasis.<br>The Biology BS with a General Emphasis program allows students to develop an upper-division curriculum tailored to meet their educational needs with the help of their faculty advisor. Students who graduate with this degree can apply their education to a variety of jobs across careers in biology.
