Students entering the Doctor of Philosophy program in Biomedical Sciences should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Graduate Admission)
Students admitted to the program should ordinarily hold a B.S. degree in one of the life sciences, including biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, chemistry or microbiology. The requirements for admission to the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program are as follows:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a B (3.00) average on a 4.0 scale. Students with advanced degrees are encouraged to apply.
GRE scores: 300 combined verbal and quantitative, and at least a 3.5 on the analytical writing section. The MCAT can substitute for the GRE (minimum score 501). These required exams are waived if the student attended Old Dominion University for their B.S. or M.S. degree, but are still required from students applying from other universities.

Research experience is highly desirable.

Writing Proficiency Policy: The Graduate Admissions Committee will request a writing sample from each new student on a science-related topic. If the committee feels that remedial assistance in writing is needed, the student will be referred to the university's Writing Center.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for international students with a degree outside of the United States: The minimum TOEFL iBT test score is 84 and with a minimum of 26 for the speaking portion. The TOEFL exam is the onlyacceptable test for satisfying the English proficiency requirement.Other test scores (GRE Verbal, IELTS, Pearson PTE, etc.) are not accepted for admission to the Ph.D. program in Biomedical Sciences.
