The growing concern about the fate of toxic substances in the environment has led to the development of regulations that require detailed environmental assessments of major projects and clean-ups. The establishment of the Superfund program has further increased the need for environmental professionals skilled in quantitative risk analysis. Growing emphasis on sustainable development has increased the re-development of ''brownfields'' and other sites that may have high contaminant levels, resulting in additional demand for environmental health professionals. The Certificate of Advanced Study in Environmental Health will provide students interested in careers in environmental health an opportunity to gain formal recognition for an academic specialization in this area. It will also provide the academic content to prepare students to sit for the Certificate Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Examination. The program features academic coursework that will develop quantitative problem-solving skills in risk analysis, toxicology, and the modeling of the fate and transport of toxic substances in the environment. The program coursework also covers the key policy, legal and management issues necessary for the development of safe and sustainable strategies for the handling of toxic substances.
