An appropriate, research oriented MSc degree or its equivalent from a recognized university.
High academic standing equivalent to a University of Toronto B+ or higher (equivalent to a 3.3 on a 4 point scale) in previous degrees.
For internet-based TOEFL, the minimum acceptable score is 22/30 for both the Writing and Speaking sections with an overall score of 93/120. This is equivalent to 580 on the paper-based TOEFL and a score of 5.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE). However, the Department of Earth Sciences requires a TOEFL score of 100 to ensure that the successful applicant can be a Teaching Assistant. A score of 85 is required on the MELAB, 7.0 on the IELTS

The Department of Earth Sciences accepts students for advanced degrees-Master of Applied Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy-in a broad range of topics in the Earth Sciences. Students may also undertake studies in interdisciplinary areas by arrangement with other departments such as Civil Engineering, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, School of the Environment, Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science and Engineering. In recent years, research by staff and graduate students has been carried out in all parts of North America and other parts of the world, both on land and at sea. In addition to field-based studies, the department has a wide range of modern laboratories, advanced studies are encouraged in a broad spectrum of geological problems. Further details of research emphases, facilities, detailed degree requirements, and graduate courses are available on the departmental website.<br><br>Students carry out a major program of original research and perform a thesis defense. Students are required to complete a total of 1.5 Full Course Equivalents (FCE), though a reduction in the number of required courses may be granted for students who have previously undertaken graduate studies in the appropriate field. Doctoral candidates are guaranteed funding for four years and must complete all requirements for the degree within six years from first enrolment. In exceptional circumstances, a candidate who has failed to complete degree requirements within this period may be considered for up to two one-year extensions with approval of the Graduate Affairs Committee and the School of Graduate Studies.
