Undergraduates majoring in Childhood Education (Grades 1 to 6) must select a 30 to 32 credit academic specialty from the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum. Such study complements the Childhood Education courses and provides you with specialized knowledge in one particular discipline. This adds depth and breath to your level of teaching expertise. As a teacher, you can transmit your enthusiasm for the focused subject to young learners, helping them to grow intellectually and socially. You may select Psychology from among the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum. Psychology is the science of behavior and cognitive processes, such as learning, motivation, emotion, sensation and perception. The program is designed to provide future teachers with an understanding of current knowledge and differing viewpoints in the field. You will not only learn about the physiological bases of behavior and the latest studies in intelligence and personality, you will learn the research methods by which such knowledge is obtained. You will select from a rich array of courses, including ''The Psychology of Gender,'' ''Psychopharmacology,'' ''Abnormal Psychology'' and ''Forensic Psychology.'' Students take 30 credits in Psychology to satisfy the liberal arts and sciences requirements for the B.S. in Childhood Education degree program.
